US/ TERRY CALLIER REVIEW/

It was a bleak old Sunday and a lifeless Trinity. The warm up DJ did his best with a few nice Latin and Funk tunes, but everyone was there for the man himself. I was less than familiar Terry Callier's work until last night but now see that his reputation is well deserved.

The first few tunes where a little too laidback and Jazz Lite for my tastes but then things stepped up a gear with a Headhunters style heavy Funk tune followed by a top Future-Jazz-Funk number with a nice sax solo. The beauty of the set was the bands ability to move between genres; Soul - Jazz - Funk - Folk and back again, wearing the musical heritage of Callier's hometown (Chicago) on their sleeves. Callier was at his best with just his guitar, playing the classic "Lazarus" as the encore, a sublimely soulful ballad from the top drawer.

The promoters Good Groove have done themselves proud with this booking and filled a gap in chilled Sunday night entertainment. I will look forward to the next one.
